The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has appointed Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla as its first female spokesperson. Padilla, who has a background in cyber and information security, comes to the role as the AFP expands its focus to external threats. She has been recognised for her expertise in these areas, including being named Global Cybersecurity Woman Leader of the Year. Padilla has also previously worked as an information system officer during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is the first woman to hold a number of positions within the AFP, including battalion commander and group commander. Her experience in command and cyber security will be crucial as the AFP looks to modernize its communications systems under its Horizon 3 plan. Padilla’s appointment represents a step toward greater diversity and inclusivity within the AFP.
