TLDR:

  • CISA conducted a tabletop exercise with the private sector focusing on AI cyber incident response
  • More than 50 AI experts from government agencies and industry partners participated

Summary:

The US cybersecurity agency, CISA, conducted its first AI cyber incident response exercise in collaboration with the private sector. The exercise, led by the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC), simulated a cyberattack involving an AI-enabled system. Over 50 AI experts from government agencies and industry partners gathered to identify information sharing opportunities and enhance public-private engagement protocols. The exercise aimed to assess response procedures and best practices for dealing with significant AI incidents, with a focus on confidentiality, integrity, and availability of AI systems. The participants also evaluated areas for improvement in response plans, information sharing, and resilience related to AI incidents. Lessons learned from the exercise will be incorporated into an AI Security Incident Collaboration Playbook to improve operational collaboration across government, industry, and partners. CISA plans to conduct a second tabletop exercise to further test and validate the playbook with AI companies in the critical infrastructure sector. CISA Director Jen Easterly emphasized the importance of prioritizing security in AI product development to mitigate risks posed by AI and secure AI systems effectively.
