The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a warning to the public about the potential cyber threats during Valentine’s Day celebrations. The CSA stated that cyber criminals take advantage of the occasion to defraud unsuspecting victims through various scams, such as online shopping and romance scams. In 2023, at least GHC 3,558,940.00 was lost through these types of scams. The CSA cautioned individuals to be wary of fake websites and online shops that offer heavily discounted packages or items, as victims often send money but never receive the products. Malicious actors also create fake business listings or profiles on Google Maps to divert legitimate inquiries to their contact numbers, resulting in financial loss for victims.

Furthermore, cyber criminals send unsolicited emails or messages claiming to be from a romantic partner or a company offering Valentine’s Day deals. These messages often contain links or attachments that install malicious software or steal personal information. The CSA advised the public to exercise caution when receiving such messages and to avoid sharing personal or financial information with anyone.

The CSA recommended using reputable online marketplaces or retailers with positive reviews and customer feedback when purchasing Valentine’s Day gifts. It also urged individuals to verify the contact details of online shops through official websites or reliable sources rather than solely relying on search engine results. Additionally, individuals should be alert for fake online shops and hyped advertisements, especially on popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram, and should request a physical location to validate the legitimacy of the business.

To report cybercrimes or seek guidance and assistance on online activities, the CSA provided a 24-hour Cybersecurity or Cybercrime Incident Reporting Point of Contact (PoC).
