Students in Northeast Tennessee are enhancing their understanding of internet dangers through cybersecurity training at Northeast State Community College. The training, known as ‘Cyber Day,’ was made possible by a grant from the Nicewonger Foundation and the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Around two dozen students from Sulphur Springs and Mountain City participated in the event, working in teams to learn about internet threats, phishing scams, and methods to secure personal information. Anna Rodgers, a research engineer with the University of Alabama-Huntsville, emphasized the importance of making cybersecurity engaging for students and highlighting it as a potential career path. The event is part of a larger five-year grant program that began in 2022 and is held twice a year at the college.
