  • The policy covers guidelines, SOPs for audit, compliance, and monitoring of cyber threats.

In response to the increasing cyber threats and attacks, the Tamil Nadu government has released Cyber Security Policy 2.0. This policy aims to ensure the protection of government assets through specific guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). It covers various aspects such as e-sign/digital signature, email security, password policy, social media policy, backup, recovery, and information security audit.

The latest policy, issued in August 2024, is an update to the previous Cyber Security Policy 2020 and has incorporated inputs from prestigious institutions like C-DAC, IIT-M, and Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency. It applies to all State government departments, State Public Sector Units, and other agencies under the Government of Tamil Nadu using IT infrastructure, networks, or digital data.

The key objectives of the Cyber Security Policy 2.0 include protecting government information assets, maximizing their availability to government and citizens, creating monitoring mechanisms, developing security risk reduction strategies, establishing security capabilities for critical systems, and implementing effective cyber security measures to detect, prevent, and mitigate attacks.

Furthermore, the policy mandates State government departments to nominate officials to coordinate with the Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) for collating information on incidents. The departments must also undergo annual training on change management, incident, and problem-solving. Additionally, a comprehensive risk assessment, backup storage procedure, and periodic restoration of datasets are emphasized to ensure correctness and completeness.

Overall, the Cyber Security Policy 2.0 in Tamil Nadu focuses on enhancing cybersecurity resilience, safeguarding government assets, and fostering a secure digital environment for all stakeholders involved in the state’s governance and operations.
