Sullivan County has become the first county in New York to utilize the New York State Security Operations Center (NYSSOC) to combat cybersecurity threats. The NYSSOC facility, based in Brooklyn, is dedicated to detecting and responding to real-time threats around the clock. Sullivan County went live with NYSSOC in late March, utilizing log data from security appliances and servers to feed into the system. This initiative aims to monitor for cyber threats, prevent incidents, and improve response times to potential threats.

Commissioner of Information Technology Services and CIO for Sullivan County, Lorne Green, emphasized the importance of quick response times to mitigate risks posed by foreign adversaries targeting infrastructure and environments. Deputy CIO Dan Smith highlighted that NYSSOC alerts the county to any potential threats, allowing for swift action based on the threat severity.

One key aspect of NYSSOC is the continuous monitoring of threats even outside regular business hours, providing reassurance to the county officials. The initiative aims to enhance data protection and cybersecurity measures, ensuring that public data is safeguarded. Tompkins County is set to be the next county to launch NYSSOC, with interest from 45 other counties in subscribing to the service.
